All The Leaves Will Fly

One leaf
And then two
With Summer dreams of embers burning
One leaf
And then four
With windswept thoughts and freedom yearning.

One leaf
And then ten
With morning dew from flowers that cry
One leaf
And then twenty
With thunderclouds that sing and sigh.

All the leaves will fly and fly
Like coloured birds that wisp and sway,
And notions glimpsed in dreamlit sky
Will steal Autumn’s breath away.

One leaf
And then sixty
On seas of stars they sail high
One leaf and then one twenty,
Sail on and wave goodbye.

One leaf on slender stick
And Spring will raise its sleepy head
To watch the last of Winter’s frost rain like sun
And bathe the newest day in wonder
– Spring has begun.
